WHAT’S ABOVE?
Triangle Park, as it currently exists, is located at the center of one of the busiest city intersections of Lexington. It is astonishingly loud, from the sounds of cars to the roaring water of the large, curved fountain at its rear. It has some trees, some seating, fountains at the front entry, and one monumental curved fountain at the back. In this proposal, the above-ground portion of triangle park is transformed into an oasis away from the city. Large soundproofing concrete “green-walls” are to line its open sides, and the main fountain is to be kept for its unique sensory properties. More trees and vegetation will be planted to partially block views of the city and immerse visitors in nature. The water at the base of the fountain will be brought out further, where a performance stage will be positioned. Elevated amphitheater steps create both the entry for the underground and shaded, flexible seating. The park has adequate space to allow for events such as art fairs, and permit the entry of food trucks.
WHAT’S BELOW?
In this proposal, the underground is to become an exhibition and event space. The floorplan is a large, mostly open space with light piercing in via skylights during the day. It includes areas fit for various programmatic purposes such as gallery halls, performance spaces of varied sizes, and conversation spaces. The primary focus was on the ever-changing qualities of light throughout the day, and how that affected the atmospherics of the space. Numerous lighting & sound analyses were ran throughout the design process, which aimed to bring cinematic qualities to the built world.
