Located in Lexington, KY, this historic home was built in the Queen Anne style in the 1800s. Our goal was to alter the existing house through additions and renovations to create a living space aligned with our values, determined through the VIA character strengths survey. We would be designing based not only on our values, but also on our personal needs, as if we were living in the home ourselves. My top three values according to the survey were: “appreciation of beauty and excellence”, “creativity”, and “love of learning”. Each of these values were applied to the project throughout the design process. The first was integrated through close attention to detail. The second, creativity, was approached by creating several areas for creative pursuits. The third, slightly trickier, was achieved through openness to programmatic adaptability. The entire home was renovated in this project, with full-new additions of the sunroom and 2nd floor rooms. Most of the additions were added onto the rear of the home so that the front would largely maintain its historic character and scale.
