Proposed Project Site: Bluegrass Distillery, Midway, KY
This conceptual pavilion project is an outdoor entertainment space created for Bluegrass Distillery, as they renovate a former farm in Midway, KY into their new distillery with agrotourism event spaces for visitors. This project involves the renovation of an existing hay barn on site and the creation of the Raincloud form pavilion with its large outdoor event space. The pavilion itself is meant to integrate into the site, flowing into usable ground space with seating and gardens and integrating itself into the barn. The barn is a large flexible space with a bar.
The concept for the design of the pavilion itself came from several experiments and explorations of aggregated geometry and the creation of visual movement in a static form. The desire was to create something that appears as if it should be constantly in motion despite its fixed state, seeming to push through its context and break away. Providing a sense of anti-gravity and weightlessness, all the while anchoring to the ground. The resulting form takes the visual idea of an abstracted raincloud, playing with sunlight and shadow during the day and glowing like a stormcloud lantern at night. The steel supports within the aggregated geometry shine like raindrops, and the lights within illuminate it from the inside out, like flashes of lightning.
