With the same Queen-Anne home project from the previous part, we were to act as client and architect for each of our classmates. The client would provide their addition project and specify what they needed for an accessory dwelling unit to be built in the backyard of the home. My ‘client’ wanted an ADU for his mother. He provided a paper sketch model showing a rectangular form with a gabled roof and zig-zagged façade walls. He specified that the unit should contain a bedroom (with the head of the bed facing north), a bathroom, storage, and a living and kitchen area. He wanted to maximize the amount of daylight that the home would get throughout the day, desiring a spiritual quality with high vaulted ceilings.
Seeing the zig-zagged walls of the sketch model, I determined that it would benefit the solar gain of the home to utilize the form to orient the windows according to the path of the sun. The unit also features a skylight running down its spine. It is designed to be optimized for potential 3D printed construction, with the walls formally lending to the process. The roof is vaulted with LVLs and the exterior of the roof is light metal. All utilities run through the slab and along the bottom of the walls in an integrated bench feature.
The front of the unit is a large patio for relaxing and dining at any time of day. It faces the back patio of the client’s home addition to facilitate connection between the family members.
